 PHOTO STORY COMPETITION 2011
for all DD writers at home or abroad

The www.dominican-diaspora.com  (DD) social network has been a showcase of literary talent from its inception.

This year, we would like to maintain DD`s presence at this pivotal literary event.

 

Therefore, we invite all members to take part in this PHOTO STORY COMPETITION and represent DD at the 2011 Nature Island Literary Festival and Book Fair.

 

Source your inspiration from this photograph  ► ►
(see at right) and write a story in 600 words.

 

Please respect the following guidelines:

  • one submission per writer

  • no age restrictions

  • give your story a title

  • story must be typed

  • story must be in no more than 600 words

  • entries must be submitted by e-mail to NILitFest@gmail.com and carbon copied to DDNIFLstory@dominican-diaspora.com

  • the subject of the e-mail must read: DD PHOTO STORY COMPETITION`

  • must include a cover letter with writer's full name, address, phone number and e-mail address

  • entries must be submitted no later than July 30th, 2011

  • a short bio will be requested of the top three writers

How & Where to Submit:

 

By E-mail: in the body of your e-mail first type your name, phone # and e-mail address followed by your (single spaced) poem.

Guidelines:

  • One (1) submission per poet
     

  • Poems can be written in the format style of – Free Verse, Rhyme or Spoken Word 
     

  • Use fresh, descriptive and colorful language that is specific and concrete; try to avoid cliché.
     

  • Poems should have a title
     

  • Poem length can range from 5 to 50 lines, though longer poems will also be considered.
     

  • Poems should be typed, “single spaced” - Verdana or Arial font, 10 point is preferred – Neatly hand written “printed” poems will also be accepted

Need and Idea or Help Getting Started?

 

When a person thinks of colors or color, one first imagines shades and hues of red, blue, green, yellow, and orange.  Combinations of colors make up everything we see.  But, color can also be described as all those things that contribute to our lives including things that surround us, personal and observed experiences, event(s), action(s) and people that affect us every day.

 

Write about an observation, a personal experience, someone, some event, some combination of things... the color(s) of Dominica.  Consider:

  • Colors - red, blue, green, yellow, orange, etc

  • Environment – sun, rain, storms, water, sea, mountains, climate, flowers, trees, plant life, etc.

  • People – ethnic variations, religion, customs, habits, etc... family, grandparents, parents, siblings, friends, fishermen, farmers, homeless

  • Language – Creole, Patois, English, French, Spanish

  • Fishing, Fishermen, Fish

  • Farming, Farmers

  • Music

  • Food

  • Other

Guidelines:

 

Submissions must be based on one or some of the following issues: child abuse, sexual abuse, drug abuse, violence and crime, teenage pregnancy, unemployment neglect and peer pressure.
